A TEACHER has made a care organisation her school’s next charity of the year after reading about its struggle in News Shopper.

Sarah Marriott, from Bickley Park School, in Page Heath Lane, Orpington, decided the school should support Careplus after reading about its plight in the August 29 issue and spoke to the head master about it.

Slashed budgets meant the 25-year-old volunteer-run organisation, which helps elderly people, has been living off dwindling reserves and faced an uncertain future.

Ms Marriott said: "It was a no-brainer. My mother-in-law went downhill quite suddenly and needed a lot of support so I know how important it is.

"It sends a message to the pupils about how important it is to look after people.

"We’re hoping the boys can volunteer and we’ll run regular events to support them.

"We’ve already raised almost £830 from our Christmas production."

MP for Bromley and Chislehurst Bob Neil said:  "The news is guaranteed to deliver some early festive cheer to the many residents who rely upon the companionship and assistance of the voluntary staff at Careplus."
