Health and Wellbeing Centre confirmed to replace Orpington Hospital

A NEW raft of health proposals for Orpington has been agreed.

Bromley Clinical Commissioning Committee (BCCC) has confirmed they do not believe the Orpington Hospital site is the right place to deliver future services from and instead they should be based at a new Health and Wellbeing Centre.

The decision to agree the changes was made at a public meeting at the Joint Boards of NHS South East London on November 29 although the final vote was cast only by Bromley primary care trust (PCT) members.

However the PCT also chose to delay the final decision over some services delivered from Orpington Hospital until the Secretary of State has responded to the Trust Special Administrator (TSA) Matthew Kershaw's report on South London Healthcare because there is some overlap between the two.

During the meeting the BCCC Chair Dr Andrew Parsons acknowledged public concern over the hospital and said there needed to be effective communications around the case for change.

He said: "We are confident the changes decided today are an opportunity to improve patient care by bringing together those services people need most often and delivering them closer to people's homes as well as having a strong focus in preventing illness and staying healthy."

So what's a "Health & wellbeing centre"?

Where's it going to be?

And as everyone guessed this is the green light to close Orpington hospital

Word on the street that it's going to be situated where the Orpington Police Station was.

They've been trying to close Orpington hospital for years and now they've got their way. So sad.

I suppose they will build yet more boxes to house yet more people who will need the non existent hospital services and full to bursting schools.

Is the new "Health & Wellbeing" centre going to be PFI funded I wonder?... lol

Still it makes perfect sense to close hospitals whilst building more and more 'homes for local' people doesn't it? :/

I'm surprised they never just built it next to the nearest crematorium. That way when you're really ill they can put you in the waiting room until there's an oven free. Over and out !

I wonder if anyone up there in NHS cloud cuckoo land has thought about what they're going to do when demand outstrips supply and more hospital space is required.

Nah, didn't think so...

I detect a bit of a recurring theme going on in the good old NHS. Sell off sites/assets for building on; spend far too much money building sexy new facilities to call your empire (via staggeringly expensive PFI wherever possible); employ still more more 'suits' on juicy contracts which reward mediocrity and don't penalise failure; impose drastic cuts on services because you've run out of money to pay your rent, inflated wage bills etc.; sell off even more land/sites/facilitie
s;
'discover', as if by magic, that provision patently can't meet demand; start building new your new empire, even more expensive, facilities to replace the perfectly usuable ones previously closed; re-hire any inept 'suits' previously granted generous payoffs...

I've also noticed a planning application to demolish Orpington fire station in Avalon road. They ARE supposed to be building a new one though and I GUESS that'll be PFI funded!

It's ironic that all this is happening at a time when we're being warned that the NHS is severely short of beds. Makes so much sense to close more hospitals, units, etc... lol

Just spent an extremely unpleasant night in A&E at the PRUH with an elderly relative where we waited for hours. I really don't think anyone would have noticed if she'd slipped away, had I not been there to tell them. Of course it'll all be so much cosier when Lewisham A&E closes down and all those seeking emergency assistance in this part of London can share experiences in the same waiting room at the PRUH... God only knows what these places are like at weekends!!

Well I suppose if it's in the old police station people can use the multi storey car park - but that closes in the evening so just make sure you don't get shut in
