THE memory of a Bickley schoolboy inspired over 100 pupils from his school to be screened for heart conditions last week.

Aspiring sportsman Ben Daniels, 15, collapsed following a cardiac arrest while training with the Ex Blues football team in March 2011.

He died in hospital three days later.

His parents, Paul and Helena, from Bickley, set up the Ben Daniels Memorial Fund to raise awareness of sudden cardiac death in the young and fund screening programmes, in partnership with heart charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

The latest round of screenings took place on November 13 in Ben’s old school, Ravens Wood, in Oakley Road, Bromley with over 100 pupils getting checked out.

Research shows every week, at least 12 young people lose their lives to sudden cardiac death in the UK.

Paul Daniels said it was an “important event for Ben’s Fund as well as for us as a family”.

He added: “Many of Ben’s friends and classmates are still pupils at Raven’s Wood and he continues to be missed by them all.

“Ben was such a positive person, a role model and a real team player, which is why we will continue to work alongside CRY, raising funds and holding regular screenings in his memory.”
