Only two days left to support News Shopper's Operation Shoebox campaign
6:00am Wednesday 31st October 2012 in Bromley By Alan Woods
THERE are only two days left for readers to support British troops abroad this Christmas by backing News Shopper’s Operation Shoebox Campaign.
More than 120 shoeboxes loaded with love have arrived at Shopper HQ this week but the last boxes must arrive by Friday (November 2).
The campaign is urging readers to brighten Christmas morning for peace-keeping soldiers by filling a box with the likes of magazines, jelly sweets, toothbrushes and chewing gum.
Members of the 14th Bromley Cubs and Beavers were among the many to embrace the campaigns spirit, with a handful youngsters filling and donating their own shoeboxes.
Assistant cub and scout leader Jo-Ann Woodley said: “I saw the campaign in News Shopper and spoke with my cubs and beavers and because my son is in the army they could associate with it.
“They have only had a short time to get the boxes together but they have done me proud.”
Elsewhere, staff at Barclays Bank in Orpington high street held a home-made cake sale on Monday (October 29) to raise money that will be used to fill shoeboxes with goodies.
Personnel banker Rebecca Adams said: “The soldiers do so much for our country so we have got to give our appreciation back somehow.”
Bexley Council also threw its support behind the campaign by publicising it online while some councillors are said to be filling shoeboxes as well.
Boxes should not weigh more than 1.8kg and a £2 coin should be attached to the lid to contribute towards shipping.
