Simon BullJimmy Mizen murder
Posted by Simon Bull at 12:17pm on Mon 12 May 08
The main focus on the website today is the murder of teenager Jimmy Mizen.

It is so hard to make sense of such a random and needless loss of life.

Mere words do not do justice to the horror of what has happened and the grief his friends and family are going through.

After 15 years in journalism I have become very hardened to bad news and it very rarely gets to me any more. This one is difficult though – from everything I’ve read it sounds like Jimmy was a wonderful kid. It has been hard reading all the news coverage of the murder without choking up a little.

It is pointless to blame this killing on anyone else but the murderer. The killing has nothing to do with multiculturalism or racial tensions – it was a senseless act of violence committed by one person on an innocent victim. End of story.

Those who might try and make political gain out of the murder – and there have been plenty of them queuing up to try and do so on this website – disgust me almost as much as the killing itself. Right-wing propaganda is not needed here. Jumping to racist conclusions based on unfounded assumptions is pathetic. It sickens me to imagine these gleeful people revelling in the chance to spread their hate, even in the immediate aftermath of someone lying dead. It is like some people are just waiting for something terrible to happen and they see it as an opportunity.

Anyway, I would like to push you in the direction of our coverage of the Jimmy Mizen murder. Web reporter Jon Cheetham was on the scene very soon after the murder. He and our other web reporter Robert Fisk have provided excellent coverage of the story, with news, pictures and video.

Our readers have helped as well, with hundreds of people posting genuine comments paying their respects to Jimmy and expressing their outrage at the crime.

We should learn from history and remember how the Nazis got to power. They made scapegoats of Jews, homosexuals, gypsies and in fact anyone who had an opnion that did not fit in with Hitler's ideology.

It is the fault of the government that nothing is being done about the rising tide of violent crime in this country and we should be demanding answers from Westminster, not our neighbours.

Far-right parties revel in the people creating scapegoats and as I commented on one of the stories, if they see a window and get into office there will not be one person in this country who will not be affected.

Your Lord, Erastus Theobald Piggott
