Pensioners trousered £47,000 from Greenwich Council for Racial Equality
9:18am Monday 23rd July 2012 in Bexley By Mark Chandler
FOR years they were seen as pillars of their community, fighting for the rights of ethnic minorities, but these two pensioners had a dirty secret.
Behind the scenes, Hardev Singh Dhillon and Makhan Bajwa from Greenwich Council for Racial Equality (GCRE) were conspiring to create false invoices for companies both real and bogus.
Treasurer Dhillon, 76, and director Bajwa, 67, abused their positions to countersign cheques made payable to themselves, before using them to line their own pockets.
In total they defrauded £47,000 from the charity and Greenwich Council.
Earlier this month they admitted conspiracy to defraud, a crime which came to light after a new chairman went through the accounts and raised concerns with the local authority.
The council ceased funding the organisation and it closed down soon afterwards - the end of a 43-year history of community support including high-profile incidents like the Stephen Lawrence murder.
Former employee Surinder Cheema, who is now setting up his own replacement organisation, said: "Since the closure, victims have really been left without any help or advice in the borough.
"Whatever they've paid, that doesn't bring back the organisation or its employees."
GCRE member William Ekinu said: "For a long time they were held in high esteem by the whole community. They were trusted. They betrayed that trust."
Bajwa lives in a large detached house in Park Crescent, Erith, and drives a Jaguar with personalised numberplates spelling out his name.
Worshippers at his local gurdwara in Belvedere are said to be dismayed at the revelations.
Mr Ekinu said: "He deceived the community that he was a genuine and honest person."
Dhillon, from Plumstead Common, and Bajwa have paid back £36,000 and said that they can pay back the rest before sentencing on August 9 at Woolwich Crown Court.

If they raise " a few thousand race discrimination claims " (proof please to back up your claims?) then you don't need a specific tax funded "monster" organisation costing millions to run to take someone to court.......you just need a lawyer!
Reading this case these two greedy individuals could even pay back 36k so it proves these people did not even need the money they stole in the first place

When someone is found guilty of any crime, never mind about defrauding a charitable organisation and are in a very prominent position, the press has every right to print the story, and pictures, just like it has been happening for hundreds of years. (Tell me, if they had not been found out, do you think they would have returned the money?)
IF YOU CAN'T TAKE THE HEAT, DON'T DO THE CRIME.
One of the blokes I have met several times Mr Dhillon, even with this millstone around his neck, I still feel he is a very decent man and just like many others that have been caught or not as the matter may be, I am more than certain that this bloke has more than paid the price for his part of the mistake and I for one forgive him for what it's worth.

I only with with solid info.
I have met the older bloke several times and have spoken with him, once at the place he worked at re a problem I had, and by all accounts he was very helpful. The other bloke, met once and said hi when we were at the same event.
I hope the judge takes into account the older blokes excellent work record, his community work and certainty that he will never make another mistake.
We can all make mistakes, it's learning from them.
I once parked on double yellow lines in Woolwich, the traffic warden ticketed me for the 4 mins parking, I did not argue as I did not wrong. As I accepted the ticket, a group of low lives wlaked past and said "flash git." as my bmw 3 series was almost brand new at the time, I pulled them up and told them i had worked hard, so take it back, they did.

Look friend. I post honestly and never resorted to abuse unlike the several posts removed from this story.
If I "tried," friend, I'd contact the tabloids and they would have a serious interest as one of these blokes had a very high profile in race hate crimes and had appeared on the tv, press/radio/etc/etc. However, I have no interest in doing that but other may do that once the pair are sentenced and/or the story is put into print in the local papers and Punjabi speaking media.

There was in-fighting amongst the staff of GCRE for years but this always happens when an organisation provides a wide range of services and there are finite resources available. It is also true that some of the ‘case working’ GCRE staff had a less than outstanding relationship with partner agencies, but this is not relevant to this case.
At the end of the day, two experienced, highly regarded individuals, in a position of trust within GCRE conspired to abuse their positions to defraud the organisation for their own financial gain.
Any good that either of these men did previously is wiped out by their heinous acts to which they have admitted. They betrayed the trust of their colleagues, partner agencies, friends and the very people who relied on GCRE for help and support. Shame on these two men!
As to the Newsshopper choosing to publish a photo showing an individuals number plate and identifying the street he lives in, I think this is dubious journalism at best. Stating that Mr Bajwa drives a luxury car and lives in a detached house in Erith would have sufficed.

Very good synopsis of the events leading to these two men pleading guilty.
Please note that the press has long published names, and addresses of people that are guilty of a crime along with the pictures of the criminal/s and their property.
As this involved fraud and money, £47,000, in my judgement the press has every right to publish the pictures. Normally, flash cars with private registration plates the aims to display the owners name, the press has every right to publish.
What i can't comprehend is that these two had good jobs, respected by many, had nice homes, cars/etc/etc, so why take the money?
Yes, people have lost jobs and even more importantly, the vulnerable, victims of race crime have lost a much needed service.
What has happened has happened and the judge will be in a good position to deliver an appropriate sentence/fine or both.
Our prisons are full, I'm certain that these two will never break the law again, so a fine should be sufficient.

NS is a long standing and highly respected news source that is backed up by a highly motivated, and very rich organsation. Staff at Ns are no fly by nights and take every care to post the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and within the law of the land.
it is indeed standard practice for good news papers to report the name, addresses, name of street, picture of the criminal/s and pictures of life style especially what is stolen is a vast amount of monies.
A friend of a friend of ours was up to no good, he got caught out stealing money from his employer and using that to better his life style, until he was caught that is. his pics were in the local paper, along with street name and pics of the cars he drove and lovely home. He went to a solicitor to sue the paper and the solicitor fell off his chair rolling in agony with laughter.
If I had defrauded a charity, caught out, pics of me and my lifestlye were printed, the last thing i would want is for the story to be covered again.

I'm not offended by your comments.
Very importantly, the pair are NOT my "friends."! I have admitted that over approx ten years I have met the older bloke. He was very helpful to me and my parents re legal and other help/advice. The ex director, said hello to him once when we were all at at a function in the whitehart road centre.
Indeed, you are entitled to your "opinion," but it never hurts if one posts his/her/their opinions in a civilised manner.

Telling people to post their opinions in a civilised manner. Who made you the law of how people should post. Get over yourself. Why use 50 words when 10 say it just as well. Cuts out all the waffle and is straight to the point. Unlike your posts. People who waffle on generally have nothing of substance to say.

Hi, I think the only people who have been victim of Mr B and Mr D have the true picture of the pair in question. Both guys kept their powerful and supportive image even outside GCRE. They had to be polite and caring towards the general public otherwise they would have been kicked out long ago. Working under Mr B was HELL. I had to worry about pleasing him more than pleasing my clients. He had no knowledge, experience or training to be even a manager. He treated his staff like he was in India and we were all his personal servants. I think there should be a serious investigation into Mrs Bajwa's projects too. Mr B was dectating her throughout her employment. We know these people better DEAR....
