Wannabe Banksy visits Abbey Wood

A MURAL painted on a post office wall has left residents wondering whether graffiti artist Banksy has visited Abbey Wood.

A two-foot high sketch of a boy in blue praying to a pink rose appeared over the weekend next to a cash machine on the post office wall.

Banksy is the pseudonym for an England-based street artist who is known for his satirical work on public buildings.

Staff at the Abbey Wood Community Centre spotted the new design on the post office next door.

Duty Co-Ordinator at the centre Penny Arnold said: "It is really beautiful.

"There is a concrete plinth running around the post office and the artist must have knelt down on the concrete in that corner."

She added: "Have we got our own Banksy in Abbey Wood or could it be an original?"

There are a few of these, not as cute, but just as good, popping up in a few places on Thamesmead i.e. in particular on the A bridge. There are also a few little flowers, like the one in this mural, on the bridge over the railway at Abbey Wood station.

I've seen quite a few of the roses around and there was a great one with some penguins under the slip road by Birchmere Park, but it got painted over.
