British Transport Police revealed 9.1 per cent drop in crime on Britain's railways

CRIME on Britain’s railways has fallen for the eighth year in a row, according to British Transport Police.

Figures revealed there was a 9.1 per cent fall in crime over the last year with robberies, vandalism and theft all decreasing.

Violent crime has dropped by 2.9 per cent while theft of passengers’ property is down 10.4 per cent and theft of railway property is down 12.8 per cent.

Chief Constable Andy Trotter said: "This sustained downward trend in crime is a tribute to the excellent partnerships we have with rail operators, who continue to invest in the security of their customers and staff.

"It also reflects the hard work of BTP staff across Britain at a time when we are demanding more and more from them as budgets decline."

Crime on the railways over the past five years has fallen by more than 30 per cent.

The figures were published on the day Secretary of State Justine Greening opened a new London CCTV Hub bringing together access to 33,000 cameras from 16 rail operators.
