THICK smoke seeped into a block of sheltered housing in Erith after a lit cigarette was thrown into a wheelie bin last night (February 21).
Firefighters were called to Lambert Court in Park Crescent after the automatic fire alarm was triggered at around 9.20pm.
When the two crews arrived they found there was thick smoke in the ground floor hallway area of the flats, which are for people aged 60 and above.
Wearing breathing apparatus and using high pressure hoses they put out the fire in the bin.
There are no reports of any of the residents needing medical treatment.
It took the crews around an hour to deal with the incident.
