TRAIN stations in Bexley could face losing their ticket office if recommendations in a transport report are given the green light.

Offices in Erith and Belvedere stations are among 265 ticket offices in London and the south east earmarked for closure.

The Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association (TSSA), the trade union for ticket office workers, said small print in the McNulty Report showed the region would be the hardest hit in the country by the closures.

General Secretary Gerry Doherty said the closures would be “a double whammy” for millions of passengers who have been hit with a 25 per cent hike in rail fares over the next three years.

He said: “Now they are set to lose one in four ticket offices and, not only are unmmanned stations less secure, tickets bought from machines are usually more expensive.”

It follows the publishing of the McNulty Report, commissioned by the Department for Transport and Office of Rail Regulation (ORR), in May.

In the report, Sir Roy McNulty identifies a number of ways to save money for passengers and tax payers.

The report will go before government ministers this autumn to be considered.

A DfT spokesman said: “We are currently considering the findings of Sir Roy McNulty’s independent report and any of his proposed changes to rail fares or ticketing will be examined as part of a Government review.”

More to come.
