A CHARITABLE group has announced it is to fund a bursary to help a local teenager who may not otherwise be able to afford to go to university.

Welling Round Table, which already funds a variety of charitable and voluntary good causes, has announced it is putting up £12,000 over the next three years to finance one male student planning to go to university in September.

The means tested bursary will include up to £3,375 a year for three years to cover tuition fees, £1,000 to cover some of the costs of books and other study materials and £600 towards travel expenses.

There will also be one-to-one mentoring.

Ideally, the successful student will come from a household with an income below £30,000 a year and already be involved in extra-curricular community work.

He will be required to be involved with Welling Round Table, including supporting at least one of its community events each year.

A shortlist of three will be selected to go before a Round Table committee with their parents, before a final decision is made.

Applications forms are available from scholarship@wellingroundtable.co.uk and the deadline for applications is May 3.
