AT their first attempt, a girls’ cricket team from Bexley has scooped the top place in the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games.
For the under-13 team, it was the first time the girls had made it to a youth games final, which was played on the indoor pitch at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
After beating off challenges from Greenwich and Haringey, the event came down to the wire, against Bromley but the Bexley girls came home the winners.
The team, with members from Bexley, Sidcup and Colfeians cricket clubs, made it through to the finals of the indoor six-a-side event by winning all their qualifying matches.
These wins included an edge-of-the-seat match against previous champions Redbridge, in which both teams scored the same number of runs, but Bexley lost fewer wickets.
Their team manager John Daniels said: “It was a great day for the girls.
“Winning at Lord's was a special moment, although there were some nerve wracking times.”
He added: "Girls’ cricket in Bexley has really taken off over the past year or so, and this victory was the icing on the cake.
“There has been some fantastic support from all quarters, including Bexley Council, clubs, schools, coaches and families."
Bexley's boys’ team also made it to Lords and came third, after losing to Hillingdon in the semi-final.
