SIDCUP: Man awarded medal by the Pope

A SIDCUP man and his family and friends are celebrating the award of a medal from the Pope for his outstanding service to the Catholic Church.

Patrick Watkins, of Rosebery Avenue, Sidcup, was presented with the Bene Merenti medal at a celebration mass at his parish church, Our Lady of the Rosary in Holbeach Gardens, Blackfen, conducted by Bishop Pat Lynch from the Catholic archdiocese of Southwark.

Mr Watkins was awarded the medal for his long service to the church, especially the Bexley Deanery’s Third World Group which channels money from the deanery parishes to agreed projects in the Third World.

Each parish takes on the sponsorship of a particular project.

After the celebration mass, the church and its parish priest Father Tim Finigan, hosted a buffet for Mr Watkins and his family, friends and fellow parishioners.

Remembering the present Pope's membership of the Hitler Youth, did the award come in the form of the Iron Cross, First Class?
