STUDENTS at a Bexley school have become involved in the battle to eradicate the crippling killer disease, polio.
The Erith School pupils have joined forces with Erith Rotary Club and Rotary’s national campaign Thanks for Life.
This aims to raise £1m to buy anti-polio vaccines to protect children against the disease.
Every £1 will buy five doses of the vaccine.
Pupils from the Avenue Road, Erith, school donated £800, all the proceeds from their recent non-uniform day, to the appeal.
Rob Newall, Erith Rotary Club president said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for our children to learn about issues facing children children in other parts of the world.”
he added: “Rotary has been involved in this fight for 25 years.
“How fantastic for a child to join the fight and be able to say ‘I helped wipe out a disease for only the second time in history. I stopped children from dying. I helped change the world’.”
A group of of students and deputy headteacher Dave Cook attended the Erith club’s weekly lunch meeting to hand over the money and enjoy lunch.
