BEXLEY: Street defence and a cardboard girlfriend spark teen interest

YOUNG people from across Bexley have chosen two teenagers to represent them in the UK’s Youth Parliament (UKYP).

The elections were part of the annual borough Word Up youth summit for secondary school students and members of borough youth groups, organised by Bexley Youth Council.

Cleeve Park School, Sidcup, pupil Harry Green, 14, and 17-year-old Suhanya Jeyashiri from Townley Girls’ Grammar School, Bexleyheath, were chosen as UKYP members and their task will be to meet local and national politicians, promote young people and work with school and youth groups across the country.

More than 90 young people attended Word Up and took part in a number of workshops on issues such as street defence, sexual health and domestic violence.

But it was not all work.

There was also a live set from local band Cardboard Girlfriend.

Council cabinet member for children’s services, Councillor June Slaughter said: “The chamber was packed full of young people and it was great to see them so enthused by the issues that concern them most.”
