A BEXLEY councillor has funded a scholarship at Greenwich University to give financial help to international students studying pharmacy.
The first recipient of Labour councillor Harry Persaud's scholarship is Marjan Manoucherhri.
She received the scholarship from Cllr Persaud at the Medway School of Pharmacy, run jointly by Greenwich and Kent universities.
Cllr Persaud, from Welling, has long-standing links with the university and with education.
He is a governor of Beths Grammar School in Bexley Village, a trustee of Greenwich Community College and is also a healthcare consultant.
Cllr Persaud said: "I have spent 45 years of my life working in the health service and I wanted to help someone studying in this field."
Guyana-born Cllr Persaud, who did his nursing studies in Britain, added: "I was also interested in supporting a student from overseas as I know what a struggle it can be to fund an education in the UK."
Miss Manoucherhri, 20, who comes from Iran, will get £1,000 a year for the next three years to help fund her MPharm course.
She said: "This scholarship will make an enormous difference to me and help me pay my tuition fees."
