A football club has rallied around its captain after he broke his leg during a match – just two days after his honeymoon.

Welling Town FC want to raise £2000 to help Chris Ware ‘get back on his feet’ after he fractured his fibula and tibia, putting him out of work for at least a month.

Kevin Oakes, director of the club, said: “He won’t be playing football for a very long time so we wanted to try and support him.

“We have been doing quite well. It’s a shame the club captain is out.”

He told News Shopper the club wants to help with Mr Ware’s finances until he can return to work as a structural glazer.

“The guys want to do a fundraiser at the end of the season for him and maybe another charity too,” he added.

Mr Ware, who had returned from his honeymoon just two days before suffering the injury, has been with the club for more than three years.

He said: “There’s no time limit on the process of recovery.

“It could be four to six weeks. It could be three months. It all depends on how much physio you do.”

Despite the crushing injury, Mr Ware is grateful to the people who have supported him so far.

“I didn’t really know at the time what was going on, my wife showed me the page and it takes you aback.

“What the lads are doing is amazing,” he said.

He also praised his teammates for helping him at the time of the injury: “The lads were absolutely brilliant.”

Having just turned 30 and got married, Mr Ware is determined to recover as soon as possible.

“For my 30th my wife bought me a trip to Rome in the back-end of April. My aim at the moment is to make it to that.”

As well as friends and family, Mr Ware has also commended the emergency services for his treatment at the scene of the injury.

“The paramedics at the time were absolutely brilliant,” he added.

“The treatment I had when they got there was world class.”
