A fish and chip shop in Bexleyheath has been told it needs major improvements after hygiene inspectors found ineffective anti-bacterial cleaners and staff wearing the same apron when handling raw and ready-to-eat food.

Big Daddy’s Traditional Fish and Chip shop in Barnehurst Road, Bexleyheath, was rated one for food hygiene cleanliness when inspectors visited in March this year.

The inspectors look at how hygienically food is handled, the condition and cleanliness of the building and how they management ensures food is safe and standards are maintained.

Each area is given a rating between zero - meaning urgent improvement necessary - and five - meaning very good.

The establishment is then given an overall rating.

Big Daddy’s has a four star review on Google but only got a one out of five for food hygiene after its inspection, meaning ‘major improvement’ is necessary.

Inspectors wrote: “You did not have written food safety procedures.

“The temperature records kept indicated that food was being stored outside of correct temperature control and corrective action did not appear to have been taken.

“Chopping boards, knives, food containers were being washed up – these items need to be cleaned and disinfected.

“The thermometer was cleaned prior to use but it was not disinfected.

“Anti-bacterial cleaners were not being used appropriately or effectively. Food handlers were wearing the same apron for handling raw meat and then ready-to-eat food.”

Inspectors said the rotisserie, refrigerator, hot holding cabinet and fried chicken fryer were all in need of a thorough clean and disinfection.

Bexley Council guidelines mean that restaurants that receive poor food hygiene ratings can be reinspected within six weeks.

A spokesman for Big Daddy's said he would welcome anyone into the back of his kitchen because he is confident they have improved.

He said: "I was surprised when we were rated one, it was quite harsh.

"We had gotten behind on paper work and now we have re-managed how we are doing things, how we keep our records. This was a wake-up call and I would welcome inspectors back whenever they want to come.

"We are a tidy shop and we have looked at what we were told to look at. We are hoping to be reinspected in the very near future."
