An IT consultant from Bexleyheath is taking on a mammoth 100-mile cycle challenge this weekend to raise money for Diabetes UK.

Darren Bull will be taking part in the Prudential RideLondon race in honour of his nieces who both have Type 1 Diabetes.

He said: “Two of my nieces, Elleanor and Pippa have Type 1 diabetes. Elleanor was diagnosed when she was six years old and Pippa eight.

“They are now 20 and 13 years and I am riding to help raise money for the ongoing research and support for this disease.

“I have participated in this event in since 2014 raising money for different charities. I like to ride on behalf of charities that I have a personal connection with and this year am doing so for diabetes UK.”

The road race starts at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and finishes at the Mall in central London.

Roz Rosenblatt, head of London for Diabetes UK, said: “Cycling 100 miles in one day is no mean feat, and requires a lot of training and dedication.

“We’re really grateful to Darren for joining Team Diabetes UK and helping us to raise vital funds to help people living with diabetes.”

People with Type 1 diabetes cannot produce insulin. About 10 per cent of people with diabetes have Type 1. No one knows exactly what causes it, but it’s not to do with being overweight and it isn’t currently preventable.

The race is on Sunday, 30 July.
