Bexleyheath officials are calling on train users to give their views on the proposals to end direct rail services from Bexley to Charing Cross and Victoria.

The proposals are included in a Department for Transport consultation on the new franchise for South Eastern rail services.

It says a “simpler service” could improve the punctuality of trains, and considers implementing “metro-style” services.

Councillr Alex Sawyer, cabinet leader for transport, said: “Bexley is home to large numbers of commuters and others who rely on the train to travel up to London.

““If the change goes ahead as proposed, the service will be reduced and local people’s lives will be made more difficult because these journeys will be longer and more complicated.

“We are heavily reliant on rail services until the investment we are seeking in new transport connections takes place. Better transport is vital for economic growth in Bexley, south-east London and north-west Kent.”

The council are asking residents to sign an online petition and use the #keepbexleyontrack tag on twitter.

Councillors are also urging residents to contact Secretary of State for Transport Chris Grayling MP and Southeastern trains about the proposals.
