A karting club which trains potential future British Formula 1 drivers is being left temporarily homeless.

The Bexley Kart Club used to operate out of Beths Grammar School in Bexley until 2014 when they were run out.

They were eventually able to move into Bexleyheath Academy but later this year they will have to move again.

Kevin Laws, team leader of Bexley Kart Club, said: “Due to the current financial position that Bexleyheath Academy find themselves in, we need to vacate the building we use to allow a redevelopment program.

“Two years or so ago we left our old spot and we got this workshop in the academy. We used to build the karts here.

“Both the team and Academy regret the split with the club very grateful for the support over the past two years and the extended period given to the club to find new premises.”

Kids from the age of eight build and assemble the karts at the workshop and race them in competitions across the country.

Preliminary discussion are in place for a move to Shooters Hill Academy in Greenwich, but it’s a tough move for a group that feels so attached to the people of Bexley.

It’s not just moving out of Bexley, but Mr Laws said that it was easy to attract kids to join the club when they had a workshop inside a school.

Mr Laws said: “This is a tremendous shame as the club has been in Bexley for close to 35 years and means Kent loses its only NatSKA kart racing team, but a new and hopefully equally successful chapter awaits.”
