A Deptford actor who wrote, produced, directed and starred as every character of a film has been nominated for awards glory alongside a host of A-list names.

Josh Burton, who went one better than Tom Hardy’s dual performance in Legend by portraying all three of his film’s major characters, has been shortlisted in the Best Lead Actor, Best Director, Best Producer and Best Short Film categories at the Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts awards.

He is up against the likes of Brotherhood director Noel Clarke for both Best Director and Best Lead Actor, and also A United Kingdom star David Oyelowo for the latter.

Burton told us: “I am truly honoured to be nominated. It is to some extent an overwhelming feeling, as it was my mum who originally broke the news to me whilst I was on a jog at 1am.

“Yes, I am definitely overwhelmed as I don't think I've fully understood how rare this blessing is.”

The actor – who studied at Dartford’s Miskin Theatre and Sidcup’s Rose Bruford College – was responsible for every single element of his drama The Dead Truth, from the writing and acting down to the editing and cinematography.

Before the film’s premiere at Deptford Cinema in July, he told us: “I saw Legend with Tom Hardy and I saw one actor playing two characters. Even though other people have done it, the way he did it in particular it was like there wasn’t any body change or aesthetic change, it was more raw acting.

“I just thought to myself, if I had the opportunity I’d like to do that. It wasn’t coming any time soon so I decided to go ahead and start writing something.”

You can vote for Josh at beffta.com/voting and the winners will be announced at ceremonies on October 27 and 28.
