A disabled elderly couple were "rescued" by an act of kindness in Crayford.

David and Pamela Fletcher, of Lincoln Close, Slade Green, were riding their mobility scooters until the battery died on Mrs Fletcher’s one on July 15.

Stranded in Burnham Road, Dartford, Mr Fletcher, 72, had to put his wife of 54 years on his lap and carried her for over a mile in the scorching heat.

The pair made it to Crayford, where Mr Fletcher said they were "rescued" by an act of kindness.

He told News Shopper: “A lady saw us and told us to wait while she got her partner to give us a hand.

“The man came and said that he’d pop our scooters in his van and take us home. I didn’t know him from Adam.

“He told us to get in his van and that he was going to pick up the scooter in Dartford and take us home.

“Everyone was so good to us - we were near a shop and a little boy came out and gave us a bottle of water.”

With temperatures reaching 30C, the couple did all they could to show how thankful they were to the man.

Mr Fletcher added: “As we got home, I just asked him to put the scooters on the pathway, but he took them all the way into our garden.

“I offered him money for his act of kindness but he refused to take any – he rescued us.”
