A man has been rescued from a burning apartment in Sidcup.

Firefighters found the man in the rear bedroom of the flat just after 11.40pm last night (May 30) in Main Road.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers were called to the blaze which damaged part of the apartment on the first floor of the block of flats.

Firefighters wore breathing apparatus to save the man and the fire was under control by 12.40am.

The man was suffering from smoke inhalation and taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: "Everyone should have at least one smoke alarm on every level of their home and the safest option is to have those linked together.

“This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home.”

A smoke alarm has since been fitted in the property but the cause of the fire is under investigation.
