The bridge in Bexley Village is finally opening, five months after engineer works began.

The new bridge at the Old Mill site will reopen to all traffic tomorrow morning (May 24) after the route was opened to southbound traffic two weeks ago (May 10).

Big complications surrounding the original foundations, as well as a rusted Thames Water main, occurred in April meaning the reopening of southbound traffic was pushed back by four weeks.

Bexley Council has confirmed that the new bridge is stronger and slightly wider than the old one which, if left unrepaired, could have potentially flooded the village the council claims.

Councillor Alex Sawyer, Cabinet Member for Traffic and Transport, said: “I would like to thank residents and businesses who have been very understanding during the works.

“This is good news for all.

“I am delighted we are able to open the new bridge two months ahead of schedule despite the complexity of the construction programme.

“I am confident that this major investment in the village infrastructure will ensure that the local community continues to thrive”.

The current 7.5 tonne weight restriction will remain in place with diversions for large vehicles in place.

Buses and coaches will remain exempt from this weight restriction.
