Bexley and Bromley’s newly elected assembly member has been voted the chairman of two Greater London Assembly (GLA) committees.
Gareth Bacon AM, who is also the leader of the GLA Conservative Group, will lead the budget and oversight committees – two powerful panels charged with keeping the Mayor of London to account.
The budget committee will scrutinise Sadiq Khan’s spending, whilst the oversight committee will review his office’s major decisions and projects.

Bexley Councillor Bacon said: “I will dedicate myself over the next year to ensuring that the new administration at City Hall is held to account, and that Londoners receive good value for money.”
Cllr Bacon previously served as the cabinet member for finance and corporate services in Bexley Council, as well as the deputy leader to Councillor Teresa O’Neill.
He announced his decision to step down from these two positions in April last year after it came to light that Cllr Bacon was London’s highest paid councillor, earning £108,000-a-year.
Cllr Bacon replaced Braintree MP James Cleverly as Bexley and Bromley’s representative. He has served on the Assembly since 2008.
