The battleground for two Greater London Assembly (GLA) seats of south east London has finished with one victory for the Conservatives and another for Labour.

Gareth Bacon has been confirmed as the London Assembly Member for Bexley and Bromley with a majority of 41,669 votes.

Mr Bacon's final count ended with 87,460 votes.

Labour's candidate Sam Russell came in second with 45,791 votes.

In third place was UKIP candidate Frank Gould with 30,485 votes.

Mr Bacon said: "London will have elected a new mayor this evening.

"It's too early to say who it will be.

"If it's Zac Goldsmith, we will continue to build on Boris Johnson's legacy.

"If it's a Labour mayor, the Members of the GLA and I have to fight back straightaway.

"Whoever is Mayor of London, we will keep his feet to the fire and hold him to account."

The vote for the super-constituency of Greenwich and Lewisham was taken by Labour's Len Duvall.

Mr Duvall took the seat with 85,735 votes and a majority of 54,895.

Trailing behind in second place was Adam Thomas with 30,840.

Mr Duvall said: "There's a problem here in London - it isn't just about being at a crossroads.

"There are many challenges and some are beginning to be dealt with but many weren't.

"We ran this campaign on positive issues and saw what challenges Londoners were facing in their daily lives.

"This result is sweet for two reasons: because we fought a positive campaign and the people rejected a negative one.

"I'm off to City Hall now for the mayoral result and I'm back at City Hall tomorrow so I think it will only be one drink for me this evening."

Imogen Solley for the Greens came in third with 20,520.

The voter turnout was 45 per cent.
