Lidl is recalling tins of its own brand herring because the label fails to warn customers that the product may contain fish and other allergens.
The labels on the Nixe brand assorted ‘Herring Fillets’ products do not state all of the allergens which may be in the product, including fish.
The omission has sparked a recall, as Lidl is told to clear the cans from its shelves.
The supermarket giant has urged anyone with an allergy to fish, milk, egg, mustard or wheat to avoid eating the product and return it to store for a full refund.
According to Food Standards Agency rules, all products sold must carry allergen warnings in English on the label.
The agency said: "The above products may contain fish, milk, egg, mustard and wheat (gluten) which are not mentioned on the label in English.
"This means the products may be a possible health risk to anyone with an allergy or intolerance to the allergens listed above."
