An Erith woman is seriously worried about a dangerous bend in the road that she feels could become a "disaster zone".

Virginia Povey, of Church Road, says she is scared "someone could get killed" at the junction joining Pembroke Road with Fraser Road.

She is particularly concerned for pupils crossing the road towards Trinity School.

The sharp corner that catches drivers out, Mrs Povey claims

The 73-year-old said: “At some point someone is going to get killed.

“Something needs to be done.

“Anyone could get knocked down - children too.

“I think it’s been more luck that nothing has happened so far.

“Cars come round the corner so fast - drivers don’t realise how sharp the turn is until they get there and then it’s too late.”

“There has been at least five accidents in the last ten years since I have been here and the council does not want to do anything about it.”

Mrs Povey would like to see traffic lights installed to avert a looming fatality but claims that the council is not listening.

Dangerous bend in question where children cross the road

In 2007 News Shopper reported on mum-of-three Sue Frazer who was leading a deputation from Pembroke Road and neighbouring streets asking for a lorry ban, a 20mph speed limit and a possible one-way system to be implemented in the street.

In response to Mrs Povey’s frustrations a Bexley Council spokeswoman said: “The traffic highways team only received a letter from this resident at the beginning of last week and a response has been prepared and sent back.

“The most recent records show that there has only been one accident on this part of the road in the last three years, as such there are no plans to change the current layout.

“To ensure council resources are allocated correctly locations with a higher collision level have to take priority.”
