These are the restaurants and other food outlets that have been given the lowest food hygiene ratings in the Bexley borough.

Our gallery above shows seven places to eat that have been given zero stars, meaning urgent improvement is needed.

It also includes 22 more takeaways, cafes, shops and other premises where food is served or made that have been awarded just one star, signifying major improvement is necessary.

The details, correct as of today (April 14), have all previously been published on the government’s Food Standards Agency website.

The ratings have been given to businesses to reflect the standards of food hygiene found when they were inspected by food safety officers from Bexley Council over the past few months.

Inspectors check the following three elements:

1. How hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored

2. The condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities

3. How the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe and so that the officer can be confident standards will be maintained in the future

It is possible some of the businesses featured above are awaiting new inspections, have changed management since being inspected or have closed in the interim.

RESPONSES TO THE RATINGS:

Frances Stupple, owner of Honeydale Farm Shop and Tea Room, said: "After our first ever visit from Bexley Council we were issued with a one-star due to not having hot water facilities in our customer toilets and necessary regulation paperwork to be completed.

"We are due to have a revisit from Bexley in the next few weeks to which they are sure we will receive a high score after commenting our hygiene is of a very high standard."

Emily Kam, from Sunrise City Chinese takeaway in Sidcup, has been in touch to say a re-inspection has led to the restaurant's rating being increased from one to four stars.

We will update this page further with any more responses submitted by the owners of the food outlets who want to explain the reasons for their scores.
