Hundreds of people have signed a petition to find an "isolated" disabled man, who has to urinate in bottles by his bed at night, a safer home.

Kevin Walker, 54, has been unable to leave his third-floor flat in Lower Belvedere for six months, because it has no lift.

As Kevin's relatives live in Lancashire and his best friend from school recently died from cancer, his family say he is increasingly alone and without support.

His concerned brother Mark Walker, 53, said: "I worry he would die and no one would know.

"He has got multiple disabilities.

"He is on oxygen 24 hours-a-day, and he can't walk very far.

TODAY'S TOP STORIES:

"He has had heart trouble as well, and a little while ago it was touch and go whether he would live or not.

"His biggest problem at the moment is he keeps falling asleep.

"He is in a terrible state."

Mr Walker is now petitioning Bexley Council to secure brother Kevin a flat - after being on the waiting list for over a year.

His current property in Waterfield Close is rented privately.

Mr Walker added: "He should have a ground floor place, with the possibility of a mobility scooter.

"Somewhere he would have some contact with the outside world.

"It would make a huge difference to his life.

"The flat he is in is squalid to say the least.

"He has been there 15 years.

"It is in a really bad state of repair."

Kevin has to sleep in his living room, and cannot get to the toilet at night.

His brother added: "My brother's had a struggle with health all his life.

"It's heart-breaking. He has had a tough old life and I just think he deserves a break.

"I realise the council have got to have a system, but for my brother it's just not working."

Kevin's elderly mum, who suffers from Parkinson's disease and dementia, is now increasingly worried about her son.

A Bexley Council spokesman said: "The council is doing all it can to assist Mr Walker but our ability to help is dependent upon the availability of suitable properties.

"Mr Walker requires a ‘Mobility A’ property which means that it is either adapted or can be adapted for a wheelchair user.

"Unfortunately there is not a high turnover of this type of accommodation."
