Residents have been called into action following the Met’s new road safety initiative “Community Roadwatch.”

The event, which took place on Wednesday August 19 in Mayplace Road West, Bexleyheath, gave six residents the opportunity to work with their local police teams to learn and understand how to deter speeding on their roads.

Inspector Dave Osborne, roads and transport policing command, said: "Community Roadwatch is a great example of local Safer Transport Teams working to improve road safety in local neighbourhoods.

"I hope lots of residents will sign up to take part and help us make the roads safer for all."

The Bexley Safer Transport Team (STT) launched the scheme alongside Transport for London (TfL). Its policing partners’ target is to halve the number of people killed and seriously injured on London’s roads by 2020.

Community Roadwatch is also a way for the police to build on existing community relationships and in theory reassure local residents that they themselves have the power to tackle local reports of speeding.

The hand held speed detection equipment is a vital tool used by the STT.

Bexley and Bromley are the currently the only two areas where the scheme is being run but the new pilot programme is set to be rolled out to all the London boroughs by 2016.

Local volunteers in each borough will be encouraged to sign up and undertake the roadside operations and to suggest sites for future activity.

Any residents in Bexley wishing to take part in Community Roadwatch, or suggest a residential area where there are community concerns around speeding, are asked to email: CommunityRoadwatch@tfl.gov.uk or contact STT.Bexley@met.police.uk
