The mum of a young man who was stabbed near a Chinese takeaway restaurant in Blackfen has thanked the woman who helped save his life.

Vehicle technician Charlie Finch, 21, from Footscray, was rushed to hospital in a serious condition after the attack near Wellington Parade at around 9.30pm on Friday June 19.

Sally Brinson came across Mr Finch, who had been stabbed in the chest, when she was picking up her dinner from Wellington Chinese, Blackfen Road.

The 56-year-old, from Sidcup, told News Shopper: "I parked outside and noticed three lads outside the door.

"I didn't think anything of it, they were just normal lads.

"By the time I got to the restaurant the three lads had gone in, and one of them was sat in a chair slumped over.

"Then one of his friends said 'can someone please call an ambulance, he's been stabbed'."

Mrs Brinson said she and another woman leapt to Mr Finch's aid, using a tea towel to the stem the flow of his blood.

She said: "Another woman was helping. The owner gave her a tea towel to help stop the blood.

"At this point he was dipping in and out of consciousness.

"I held his hand and tried to keep him conscious.

"Because he was getting very cold I got him a blanket and wrapped him in the blanket."

Police and an ambulance arrived soon after, and Mr Finch was taken to hospital.

Mrs Brinson added: "The two lads he was with were in absolute shock.

"I told them they need to ring his parents. Whatever had happened his parents needed to know.

"It is terrible. While I was there I was fine, I went into auto-pilot.

"As soon as the police said I could go and I was in my car I cried all the way home.

"You read about these things, you here about these things, but to actually see someone stabbed - all I could think about was what if he was my son?"

News Shopper:

After Mr Finch's mum Sue Finch got in touch with News Shopper, we tracked down Mrs Brinson, who she has been able to thank in person.

Mrs Finch said: "I spoke to the ambulance people and she said it was really, really important because they stemmed the bleeding.

"They knew exactly what to do, thank god.

"I do district nursing myself so I know how important it is for people to be first aid aware. Being first on the scene, it’s up to you.

"I very grateful, that's all I can say."

She added she hopes Mr Finch will make a full recovery.
