Winston Churchill, one of Kent’s greatest sons, is set to be portrayed by one of the county's finest actors in a major TV adaptation.

Michael Gambon, who was raised in Crayford and lives in Meopham, will play the famous Prime Minister in ITV’s upcoming Churchill’s Secret.

The 120-minute film will air next year and is based on Jonathan Smith’s recently published book The Churchill Secret: KBO.

Set in 1953, Churchill was Prime Minister for the second time and in his late 70s. The film is about a life threatening stroke that he suffered that was kept secret from the world and his recovery amid political and familial tension.

Filming starts shortly in London and at Churchill’s family home, Chartwell, near Westerham.

ITV’s director of Drama Steve November said: “Churchill’s Secret is the extraordinary and compelling story of how one of our country’s most famous political figures battled back from life-threatening illness to hold on to power.”
