A thousand children have helped make a yearly miniature marathon the most successful to date.

The 1,000 youths aged five to 16 completed the 2.62-mile fun run around Greenwich Park on April 19.

The third annual Mini Marathon, sponsored by John Payne Estate Agents, is expected to raise £40,000 for Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice.

The event kicked off with a performance by the Rock Choir and a warm-up session with fitness instructors from Greenwich Get Active, before the Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Mick Hayes, waved the flag to start the race.

Community fundraiser Augusta Adu said: "This was the third year of the mini marathon and the number of runners entering has made this our most successful event yet.

"It was wonderful to see so many children running in fancy dress and enjoying themselves. The best part for me was seeing the children's faces as they crossed the finish line to receive their medals.

"We want to thank each and every one of our marvellous mini marathoners for their dedication, hard work and effort, and we look forward to seeing them all again in 2016."
