A Bexleyheath pooch, found abandoned in Sevenoaks, has brushed off her "ruff" start in life and appeared at Crufts.

Staffordshire bull terrier, Layla, was found wandering the streets by a member of the public three years ago.

Suffering from mange and severely underweight, she was taken into the care of Sevenoaks District Council.

Ann-Marie Milton, the council’s animal control officer, said: "Unfortunately people can be very nervous about these breeds of dogs and consequently we’re more likely to see them unwanted and as strays.

Layla and Suzy in the main ring at Crufts

"I’m so glad we could help get Layla back to full health and find such a good, loving home".

The pup was rehomed by New Hope Animal Rescue Centre, based in Northfleet, and adopted by Suzy Iredale from Bexleyheath.

The pair joined the East Anglia Staffordshire bull terrier display team early last year in a bid to help combat the breed's negative image.

They took to the main ring at Crufts for the first time during an agility performance on March 5.

Ms Iredale said: "When I got her she was bald and had to have several emergency operations.

"We also had her spayed at the earliest opportunity as she hadn’t been before.

"Now she’s the happiest little dog. She gets on very well with children and lives with other dogs, cats and even chickens.

"I would advise anyone to do their research first, but don’t let yourself get put off by breed."
