Welling’s Mum of the Year was presented with her Tesco award last night (March 1) by soon to be mum-of-two Fearne Cotton.

Emma Salisbury, 43, was given her Achieving Mum Award at The Savoy hotel by judge Sara Cox and the Radio 1 DJ, who is ambassador for the awards.

Mrs Salisbury said: "It was such an amazing day. We walked the red carpet and were treated like celebs."

Fearne Cotton announced she was pregnant for the second time last week.

She tweeted to say she was emotional after listening to the inspirational stories of the winning mums.

Mrs Salisbury added: "Fearne was lovely and we all said congratulations to her at the Tesco Magazine photo shoot."

Mrs Salisbury describes herself as a "normal mum" - but she had 16 nominations from friends, family and anonymous voters.

She was praised for her dedication to finding a cure for choroideremia, a rare eye condition which could make her son Tommy, 14, blind.

The marketing assistant, of Yorkland Avenue, has raised £400,000 since setting up the Tommy Salisbury Choroideremia Fund in 2005.

She even helped to fund the first clinical trial – it is now hoped the NHS will provide treatment for the currently incurable disease by 2018.

Mrs Salisbury’s son Johnny, 5, may also have genetic disease which causes progressive blindness – but she is determined to find a cure.

She said: “It is the main goal in my life and I will not rest until Tommy has had some sort of treatment.”

This was the tenth year of Tesco's Mum of the Year Awards - and of Mrs Salisbury's groundbreaking charity fund.
