Firefighters spent more than three hours tackling a massive fire in Erith which could be seen for miles around.

Fifteen fire engines and 97 firefighters and officers were called to the blaze at industrial units in Yarnton Way in the early hours of this morning.

A storage warehouse was completely destroyed by fire.

Two adjacent units and three lorries were also damaged.

There were reportedly several explosions heard.

Witness Ruth Bere said: "My house is directly opposite the site. The initial explosion was so powerful I actually thought someone was kicking in my back door."

With smoke and flames being visible from miles away, 999 control operators took more than 50 calls in the early stages of the incident.

Station manager Norman Perry said: "Fire crews worked hard to bring this under control. The blaze was in an industrial area and we managed to stop it spreading to any residential homes."

No homes were affected by fire but residents were advised to close doors and windows dueot the smoke.

Firefighters have remained at the scene during the day damping down pockets of fire.

London Fire Brigade was called at 2.02am and the fire was under control by 5.40am.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
