Bexley Council has been praised for finishing top of a London league table for recycling.
Research shows Bexley achieved a recycling rate of around 55 per cent last year, 11 per cent higher than the national average.
The Bag it or bin it? report, published by the London Assembly Environment Committee, considered best and worst practise across the capital.
The report says: "London urgently needs to improve its performance in recycling food waste from its high-density housing stock.
"Positive examples exist, such as Bexley in London or Milan in Italy, which provide best practices that may help others."
The council was also praised for its use of the Green Points scheme, where residents can win vouchers for high street discounts or swimming sessions through recycling.
Rates have increased since this was introduced.
Lewisham Council has one of the worst recycling rates at around 17 per cent.
The other worst offenders in south London were Lambeth and Wandsworth with Newham, in east London, having the lowest rate in the capital overall.
