Improvement works in Northumberland Heath are expected to take up to six weeks to complete.
The work which began last week is designed to enhance the public spaces at the junction of Bexley Road and Mill Road, by reducing clutter and providing new paving and trees.
Cllr Linda Bailey, cabinet member for regeneration and growth, said: "I hope these works will create a sense of pride in the town, and encourage people to spend more time there."
The entrance to Mill Road from Bexley Road will be closed to vehicles for the duration of the works.
Details of the temporary traffic diversions and existing restrictions are signposted at key junctions in Northumberland Heath.
Mill Road car park, the library and other local roads will all be accessed from Northumberland Park and St Paul's Road.
Pedestrian access will be provided throughout the works.
