Thamesmead vigilantes have been getting to grips with speed cameras in a bid to reduce driving-related crime.

Residents set to work, as part of the Thamesmead Road Watch scheme, on Yarnton Way on December 4 under the guidance of the Thamesmead East Neighbourhood Policing Team.

Those taking part are able to supply police with registration numbers of those driving too fast for the area and drivers are then sent a letter telling them they have broken the speed limit.

PC Chris Molnar said: "I know that some readers will scoff at offenders being sent a letter but we also need to educate drivers as well as using enforcement.

"Take Yarnton Way, most people think it's a 40 miles-per-hour road, but it's not, it's a 30."

The next date for Thamesmead Road Watch will be December 22 at 7pm.
