Food bank donations by employees of a social housing landlord are set to help struggling families in Thamesmead this winter.

A week-long campaign by the Peabody Group saw 1,000 employees donate more than a ton of dried and tinned food.

Food poverty is at record levels, with food bank charity The Trussell Trust reporting almost a million emergency food parcels were given out across the country over the last 12 months- almost three times as much as the year before.

Director of resident services at Peabody Joe Joseph said: "Every day families in London go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to having to pay an unexpected bill on a low income.

"Food banks provide emergency food and support to people experiencing a crisis.

"This year we have had a phenomenal response from employees across the Peabody Group, demonstrating their strong commitment to tackling food poverty and supporting our residents and communities through difficult times."
