A man was taken to hospital after a fight broke out between customers at a Sidcup curry house.

The incident, involving four men, happened at Maharani Indian Restaurant in Halfway Street at around 8.30pm on Saturday (November 22).

It left a 48-year-old man with injuries to his face and ear and a suspected broken ankle.

Stephen Johnson, 17, was with a friend in the flat above the restaurant when they heard a commotion downstairs.

He told News Shopper: "I have a friend who lives above it and we were sitting in his flat.

"We heard all this commotion. There were police outside, a police van, an ambulance, all sorts, two young girls were screaming.

"I went down to have a look. There was blood all over the floor at the front of the curry house.

"People were carrying on eating which I thought was strange."

He added: "What happened was a family was eating dinner, a father, mother and two girls, and some men came in to order take away.

"I don't know which way round it was but someone annoyed the other and the father stood up to the men.

"As the dad left the table after finishing his meal a knife was pulled out and the father was stabbed with a table knife.

"He fell into the table and broke his leg."

A spokesman for Bexley police said: "Police in Bexley were called at around 8.30pm to a restaurant in Halfway Street, Sidcup to reports of a fight inside the restaurant.

"Officers arrived and found a 48-year-old man with injuries to his face and ear and a suspected fracture to his ankle. London Ambulance Service attended and he was taken to hospital, where he currently remains.

"It is believed the man became involved in an altercation with three other men at the restaurant and a fight broke out between them.

"The other three men involved - believed to be white men in their early 20s - had all left prior to police arriving. Enquiries are ongoing to identify all three.

"The 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray, although he remains in hospital at this time.

"Officers from Bexley are investigating and enquiries continue."

A spokesman for Maharani said: "We are a small family run restaurant and have been established for five years with no such incidents such as that took place on Saturday.

"An incident happened on Saturday between two sets of customers, unfortunately one customer was injured.

"Staff reacted promptly, emergency services where called immediately and the situation was handled from there by them."
