A Sidcup woman who grew up on the banks of the Thames has celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by loving friends and carers.

Centenarian, Alice Tacon, of Boundary Road, marked the milestone occasion with a party at her home for 27 friends, organised by neighbour, Rita Friend.

Mrs Tacon was born in Greenwich and later in life worked at Greenwich Park providing breakfast for the park keepers and security.

Mrs Tacon's niece, Margaret Mair, aged 70, who lives in Hertfordshire said: "When she was young she played in Greenwich market and by the Thames with her sisters.

"During the war she worked in a factory on the river bank.

"She loved working in the park, she worked there until she was in her 70's."

The 100-year-old moved to Sidcup around 15 years ago.

Mrs Mair added: "She is such a character, always making us laugh - nobody can say 'Aunty Alice' without smiling.

"She had a lovely day and even sang happy birthday to herself."
