A group of mothers from Bexley breast-fed their babies on-mass at a sit-in in a Bexleyheath pub - after a young mum was asked to cover-up with a dirty dishcloth by a member of staff.

The 'boob and bottle feed-in' took place at the Furze Wren in Market Place on September 25 after 25-year-old Olivia Pozniak of Normanhurst Avenue, Bexleyheath was asked by a member of staff to 'cover-up' whilst she breast-fed 11-week-old Louie.

On September 21 Ms Pozniak was asked by a member of staff at the pub to 'cover-up' and reportedly handed a dirty dish cloth whilst she had breakfast with friends in the pub - prompting the mother-of-four to spark up a pro-breast-feeding protest.

She said: "To me it's all the same, syringe, boob, bottle - you're just feeding your baby.

"I wanted people to know about this and I am so pleased that people have turned up to support me."

Miss Pozniak spread the word about her protest on Facebook - sparking the interest of 60 women - 20 of whom turned up with their hungry babies in tow.

One mother who joined the protest was Gratiela Sidor, aged 43, from Dartford who had seen the event advertised on Facebook.

Miss Sidor, who was breast-feeding eight-month-old Georgia, said: "We have the lowest figures across the world for breast - I think that's very sad - it's a natural thing to do.

"I travel from Dartford to London on trains and buses to see her dad and I have to breast-feed on the way.

"I have never had any trouble but I always have an answer ready as I feel as if I will."

Linda Cone, aged 32, from Belvedere also supported the protest along with Archie, aged two.

She said: "My boys are two and four now and I don't breast-feed any more but I saw this on Facebook and came along to support Olivia.

"I breast-fed both of my boys in public - I was really lucky, I had no problems at all but I don't think anyone should be made to feel uncomfortable about it."

Laura Martin, aged 26, from Bexleyheath who works as a breast-feeding peer supporter was with Ms Pozniak when she was asked to 'cover-up' and turned out to support her friend during the feed-in.

She said: "It’s nice to see familiar faces and people that have heard about it on Facebook"

"Backlash always happens but the more we see of it, the more normal it becomes"

Pub-goers who were not part of the protest also shared their opinions on the event.

Maude Gridley, aged 84, from Bexleyheath said: "You can always cover up, you don’t have to expose yourself"

"It’s a free country. It’s much better to feed your baby than it be crying"

Barbara Tanner, 76, also from Bexleyheath added: "Most of the men in this pub have seen breasts before, they’re groping them all the time"

A group of women also turned out to support the Furze Wren.

Nikki Scott, aged 29, whose partner Lou Scott works at the pub turned up with her 13-week-old son William.

"I would usually wear a cover but if I forget it it's never a problem.

"There is a designated family area but it's a really friendly pub."

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: "We were aware that Mrs Pozniak was holding a feed-in at the pub and our staff were more than happy to accommodate her and the other mothers.

"Hopefully this will bring matters to a conclusion.

"We reiterate that all of our pubs across the UK welcome mothers who wish to breastfeed their children."
