Bexley volunteers have been honoured at a special celebratory event at Crayford Library for their efforts at boosting reading.

More than 50 people, aged 15 to 80, enjoyed a session from storyteller Kevin Graal at the library in Town Hall Square as part of The Summer Reading Challenge scheme.

Children of all ages take part in this scheme which is the UK's biggest reading event.

Staff and volunteers helped deliver the Mythical Maze-themed initiative across Bexley’s libraries to more than 4,500 children.

Deputy Bexley Mayor Councillor Ross Downing presented each of the volunteers with a certificate at the event on September 9.

Suvetha Suresh, 15, from Townley Grammar School said: "I loved helping out with the Summer Reading Challenge. It was really fun working with all the children and the other volunteers.

"I used to enjoy taking part in the reading challenge when I was younger so it was nice to encourage others to do it too."

The aim of the challenge is to get children to read six books from their library during the summer holidays.
