An angry shopper has spoken out about "unfair" parking fines being handed out to supermarket shoppers in Welling.

Sandra Mecredy, aged 54 of West Heath Road in Bostall Health told News Shoppper she was "fed-up" of Bexley Council commissioning a camera-car to park along the road from the Tesco store in Upper Wickham Lane - the camera captures shoppers who wait on an unmarked pedestrian area to pull into a parking space.

Mrs McReedy said: "The camera-car sits about a mile down the road and people can't tell the difference between the path and car park.

"It's completely unfair as it's not obvious where the path ends and the car park starts - people are waiting for a few minutes for a space and they've got a ticket - it's a scam.

"I got a ticket last year for my wheels being slightly on the path - I was furious."

The infuriated driver claims that all that would be needed would be for Tesco or Bexley Council to paint a yellow line separating the two areas.

She added: "I've spoken to Tesco on a few occasions and they don't seem to care - all they need is a yellow line or a sign warning people not to park there.

"They're going to lose business."

A spokesman for Bexley Council said: " We require pavements to be kept clear of vehicles so pedestrians, particularly those with sight difficulties, mobility problems and buggies can use them safely. Vehicles being driven, stopped or parked on pavements also causes damage to the surface, which then becomes a further hazard to pedestrians.

“Our records show, it is drivers who park their vehicles (and not those simply waiting for a space) on the clearly defined pavement, to go into the shop and those that contravene the yellow lines that receive tickets at this site.”

A spokesman for Tesco said: “We have five car parking spaces at our Welling Upper Wickham Express store which are all signposted. These car parking spaces are located directly outside the store and are for customer use. We will look into extra ways on how we can make this clearer.”
