Crime and anti-social behaviour at Bexley Railway Station is on the increase, British Transport Police (BTP) statistics show.

Between March 2013 and February 2014 21 incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour, two of which were classed as violent crime, took place at the station on Station Approach, Bexley compared to just 15 in the same period a year earlier, none of which were classed as violent.

Two passengers were victims of bike theft between 2013 and 2014.

And Crayford Railway Station on Lower Station Road, Dartford, has seen crime and anti-social behaviour more than double since 2012 with 31 incidents taking place between March 2013 and February 2014 compared to just 14 during the same period a year earlier.

One incident of the 31 was classed as a violent crime and 14 passengers had their bikes stolen between 2013 and 2014 compared with just five between 2012 and 2013.

Sergeant Rick Usher, of BTP and based in Lewisham, said: "Overall crime is down on the railway and when you look at these figures in the context of the hundreds of passenger journeys made at Bexley and Crayford everyday, the chances of becoming a victim of crime remain very low.

"Bikes are a popular target for thieves but there are a number of steps cyclists can take to reduce their risk of becoming a victim.

"Officers regularly hold cycle marking surgeries at Bexley and Crayford stations and will be holding the next event on Monday, 14 April at Bexley station."

Sgt Usher added: "We want people to report crime to us wherever they see it taking place on the rail network.

"There are now more ways than ever for people to report incidents to us, which could be a contributing factor to the marginal rise in some of the violence categories during the past 12 months."
