Cost of repairing Bexley's potholes rises by £74,000 this winter

The cost of repairing potholes - like this one - across Bexley has risen.
THE cost of repairing potholes across Bexley is set to rise by £74,000 this winter.
Record rain totals and freezing temperatures have taken their toll on the boroughs 331 miles of road, racking up a repair bill of £660,000 for the year 2012/2013.
This is £559,000 more than Bexley Council spent on repairs just three-years ago, in 2009/2010, when the bill was just £101,000.
The cost has steadily increased since and last year it totalled £586,000.
Bexley Council’s cabinet member for the environment Councillor Gareth Bacon said: "The council repairs more than 2,500 potholes every year.
“They can be hazardous to motorists and cyclists, so we work hard to try and stay on top of the problem and maintain safety.”

A massive increase in funding is required to bring roads up to acceptable standards, but in this economic climate that isn't going to happen any time soon is it?

Could it be that the council, in previous years, have not spent what they should have spent on potholes, which is why because they are now playing catch up, the council report a bigger than normal expenditure on road repairs? and lets not forget, it is their job to fix the roads when they become damaged, they are paid a lot of money to do so (road tax) and if they spend that money on other things, then please don't complain. Personally I would spend road tax on the roads, and if someone with a bucket of Tarmac wanted to dump it in a pothole good luck to them, but I think that is illegal, so sorry council whether you whine or not we can't do much about the potholes, only you can sort that problem out.
Perhaps if the council didn't have such a cushy deal with Conway's we might have a bit more local competition for these services and the total cost might be a wee bit less...
