DRIVERS are complaining of massive tailbacks in Erith and Crayford today thanks to half-term roadworks.

Taxi driver John Palmer claims works in Thames Road near the waste reception centre turned a five minute journey into an hour-long nightmare.

He was travelling back to his company’s base in Optima Park from the Dartford Crossing when he got stuck on Bob Dunn way.

Mr Palmer claims he and most of the firm’s 25 drivers are running more than an hour late.

He said: “It’s 2013 for god’s sake.

“It’s just a hole in the road that’s been like that since before Christmas.

“I don’t think they give a monkeys about carbon footprint when you have got 50-60 trucks stuck pumping out diesel like they are today.”

A council spokeswoman said: "Essential carriageway repairs along Thames Road are being carried out during half-term at off peak hours, between  9.30am and 3.30pm, while traffic is lighter than usual.

"The repairs will take two days to complete.

"While there may be some minor disruption, the only other option would have been to close the road put a diversion in place, which would cause widespread disruption for road users."
